Electric Lift Trucks

Electric Lift Trucks

Hy-Tek represents the full line of Yale lift trucks in Central Ohio, and Yale Materials Handling is one of the largest volume producers of zero emissions electric lift trucks in North America. The company has developed the next generation of electric rider lift trucks with their ERC-VG series. This line of zero-emissions forklifts incorporates application-matched performance with environmentally trustworthy technologies. The result is superior performance that is equal to an Internal Combustion Engine lift truck, but without the emissions. The ERC-VG electric rider product is considered the most efficient lift truck in its class in North America.

AC Powered Mobile Equipment

Yale was among the earliest adopters of energy efficient AC motor and control technology. Yale's early pursuit of improved energy efficiency is affirmed by competitive testing which shows the Yale 5000 lb. electric rider product offers the best energy efficiency (energy used per load moved) of any lift truck in its class in North America.

Why is AC power better? Generally, it provides up to a 40% increase in travel speeds when compared to earlier DC-powered models. In many electric lift trucks you'll now find:

  • Improved performance - Faster acceleration, travel speed and lift speed.
  • Increased productivity - AC maintains performance as voltage drops from the battery, while DC performance is directly related to voltage.
  • Longer battery run time - You'll see improved efficiency with fewer stops required to recharge.

Fuel Cost Savings

The operational savings and longer running life will more than offset the difference in purchase price of an electric forklift as shown in the example below.

Braking And Other Design Innovations

For their electric truck line, Yale has introduced a system which recaptures energy into the truck during braking and the lowering of loads. This recaptured energy is then reused, reducing the overall energy consumption of the truck. Through innovative engineering, Yale has lowered non-productive energy use throughout their mobile equipment vehicles by employing a combination of weight reduction, drive train efficiency and hydraulic system efficiency.

New Fuel Cell Technology

Yale is among the first to use working fuel cells in actual applications. Yale continues to support the adoption of greener technologies through engineering collaboration, analysis and internal and field validation testing.

Environmentally-Friendly ICE Lift Trucks

ICE Lift Trucks

Yale has introduced spark-ignited ICE forklift models that meet or exceed CARB 2010 (California Air Resources Board) requirements. According to testing reviewed by the EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), Yale industrial trucks rate among the lowest in exhaust emissions in the industry. Yale diesel lift trucks are becoming increasingly cleaner through ongoing development with diesel engine suppliers to meet Tier III standards and the upcoming Tier IV standards. Additionally, Yale has engineered their ICE products for extended service intervals. For example, Yale has reduced the number of oil changes, which not only reduces maintenance costs, it helps lower consumption of nonrenewable fossil fuels. In addition, Yale has introduced an electronically controlled transmission which significantly reduces tire and brake wear on ICE lift trucks.

Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV)

Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV)

Flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) were developed to run on gasoline or a blend of up to 85% ethanol (E85). Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from a range of starch-based plants such as corn. Today, E85 is one of the more environmentally-friendly fuels. It offers lower tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions and it has the highest oxygen content of any fuel, which means it burns cleaner.

The Tiger Truck line of utility vehicles from Hy-Tek offers trucks that operate on various fuel blends. Tiger Truck can deliver a series of modifications that permit its rugged Star class vehicles and its Champs line to operate on multiple fuel blends in a single advanced fuel system. You can use unleaded gasoline or ethyl alcohol fuels (usually ethanol) in any mixture up to E85. Tiger's FFV line is ideal for urban areas where environmental emissions and air quality is a concern.

Flex Fuel Vehicle

You'll find there are numerous state and federal laws and incentives encouraging the use of alternative fuel, multi-fuel and flex-fuel vehicles. Be sure to look for incentives that may be available in your specific region. To review various federal ethanol-related incentives and regulations go to:

Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)

Liquid Petroleum Gas

LPG is one of the cleanest energy sources in terms of transporting the fuel, storing the fuel, and also in terms of its end-use. The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from LPG are considerably less than most other fossil fuels. LPG emits almost no nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulphur oxide (SOx) or particulate matters. This means LPG helps preserve the environment, helps fight climate change, and aids in preserving indoor and outdoor air quality.

Many lift trucks are powered by LPG gas because it is so efficient. With a high calorific value (47.3 Tj/Gg), LPG is among the most efficient fuels available today.

You can use LPG to fuel almost anything. It's not only used to power mobile equipment, it can be used for automobiles, space and water-heating equipment, and LPG can even be used for cooking. LPG is a highly flexible, portable and immediately available fuel solution. There are numerous federal incentives to encourage the use of LPG, including a rebate program for industrial forklifts.

Battery Technologies and Reclamation

Battery Technologies and Reclamation

Battery Reclamation:

Hy-Tek can assist in recycling your old batteries to help preserve the environment and to meet federal and local recycling requirements. Today, lead-acid batteries are by far the most fully recycled of consumer products. Recycling often recovers approximately 97% of the lead and plastic in a lead-acid battery. In fact, the millions of lead-acid batteries now powering industrial applications or used in starting vehicles have been--and will continue to be--recycled many times. From both a cost and resource-saving standpoint, battery reclamation is vital.

Battery Technologies:

Hy-Tek's battery suppliers employ the latest technologies to improve battery material composition and battery efficiency. You'll find battery technologies and efficiencies have changed rapidly in the past decade. No longer are we tied to batteries that must charge for eight hours, then cool for eight hours. New fast-charge or rapid-charge technologies allow mobile equipment operators to return an 80% discharged battery to a full state of charge in approximately two hours. This improved efficiency may make electric-powered lift trucks an even better option in the future, leading to a reduction in the overall number of internal combustion vehicles utilizing fossil fuels.

In addition, lift truck manufacturers, such as Yale Lift Trucks, are also exploring advanced, more energy-efficient lift truck battery chemistries and technologies to further reduce energy consumption, help improve overall productivity and lower toxic material content.
